When Raymond Ng, proprietor of Grocery Outlet, was 16 years old, he wanted a car. His dad wisely said, “Well, go to work.” Raymond headed right to Safeway, standing in line for two days before he got to take a test to be a bag boy. He landed that job and ended up working his way up at Safeway for 30 years. In 2014, Raymond took over the Grocery Outlet, in part he notes, thanks to The Portola Neighborhood Association’s insistence to corporate headquarters that the new owner be a local Portolan.
Raymond is not just a Portolan, he is a lifer! He grew up here and never left. However, part of his time as a student at ER Taylor did not include attending the campus on Burrows Street. Instead, while that campus was being earthquake retrofitted, the ER Taylor students were bused to Treasure Island! Raymond enjoyed those bus rides thanks to a driver who played 70s R&B.
Raymond is a genuinely sweet fellow who loves the friendly spirit of Grocery Outlet customers. He notes, “They are all like family and that is the coolest feeling in the world!” He enjoys seeing previous teenage employees return after college to visit and catch up. Raymond strives to hire locally to support the community and to ease Bay Area traffic; an environmental and efficiency ethos that he swears by!
These friendly and helpful employees -- Nancy, Tiffany, ThinThin, Michael, 2 Joeys, Melissa, Sal, Jerry, Jonathan and Jason -- all live in the Portola or surrounding neighborhoods. Perhaps this Grocery Outlet has a unique feel because of the kindness and warmth of the staff. Another part of it could be the wine selection at great prices -- I sure love stocking up on the latest greatest-tasting red wines!Way back when, with $500 of his bag boy earnings, Raymond got the car: a VW Rabbit that he rebuilt himself. He learned a lot from that rebuild and honors his dad for encouraging him to “go to work.” If you hope to support local business and a guy with an “Attitude of Gratitude,” get yourself down to Grocery Outlet!
